I have really been giving thought to how I can better stay engaged with the NHL over the past several months, other than just being a fan of the game. I’ve been busy with a number of other things, and blogging has taken a back seat. I still really want to do something with this site, though. In order to achieve this, I’ve decided that I want to learn and understand statistical analysis. There have been some great advanced stats that have emerged over the past few years. Plus, statistical analysis is fairly popular right now. Who knows, perhaps it could lead to something bigger.
I’ve always been a bit envious of my baseball friends who have a plethora of stats at their disposal to better analyze and understand the dynamics of their game. While the NHL won’t reach that level, there are some decent stats that I want to research and understand. Hopefully, I will be able to use these to bring my own insights. Specifically toward goaltenders of course, but since the team game plays a much more vital role than it does in baseball, there will definitely be a need to also study some of the advanced team statistics. This way, I can try and reasonable extrapolate team functionality that directly or indirectly affects goaltender statistics.
A lot of it seems like smoke and mirrors. Kinda like peering into a crystal ball to divine out how a goalie should/will perform in given match-ups. That may well be the case, but it will be an interesting experiment in any case.
